Backtrack Over the Top

Neutral ZoneFull IceIntermediate3v2Backcheck/D-Zone
Objective: When the puck turns over, forwards sprint above it before they defend — reload over the top, then take lanes. Setup: Two forwards attack; the coach calls 'turnover!' and the opponents counter the other way. Forwards must reload. Execution: On the call, both forwards sprint back through the middle of the ice — over the top of the puck. Only once they're above the puck do they pick up lanes and men. D1 holds his gap on the carrier the whole time; play the counter out live to the net. Coaching points: Sprint to the dome — above the puck — THEN defend. Chasing from behind fixes nothing. Reload through the middle; the boards route is 30 feet longer. Communicate on the way back: who has the carrier, who takes the wide lane.
