Box+1 D-Zone Coverage
D-ZoneIntermediate5v5Backcheck/D-ZoneTeam Systems
Objective: Simple, teachable zone coverage: four players hold a box around the house while the center hunts the puck everywhere. Setup: D1/D2 low, both wingers high in a box shape; C is the +1 chasing the puck-carrier. Opponents cycle and work the points. Execution: C pressures the puck wherever it goes — corner, wall, point — always arriving on an angle that steers back toward the box. The box slides as one unit with the puck: strong side tightens to the wall, weak side sinks toward the slot. Trigger: C gets sealed on the wall = nearest box player steps out to double, the other three shrink and zone up his man. Coaching points: Use it when: teaching zone principles, or against teams that beat man coverage with picks and switches. What beats it: a patient point-to-point with a bumper in the middle of the box — wingers must pinch that middle touch. The box protects ice, not men — eyes on the puck, head on a swivel, nobody chases out of the house except the +1.
