Retreating 1-4 Blue-Line Wall

Objective: Protect-the-blue-line defense: one token forechecker, four skating backward in a wall that retreats with the rush and denies the line. Setup: F1 alone above the puck; F2, D1, D2, F3 spread evenly across the ice, retreating together in front of your blue line. Execution: F1 doesn't chase — he steers the carrier off the middle and takes away one lane with his stick. The four retreat at the speed of the rush, staying flat and even — nobody gets beaten one-on-one because nobody is ever alone. Trigger: as the carrier reaches the red line the wall STOPS retreating and stands up at the blue — force the dump or the turn-back. Coaching points: Use it when: killing the last two minutes, or against a team that wins with controlled entries — this system trades ice for zero odd-man rushes. What beats it: a change of pace — a carrier who stops up flattens the wall; the nearest man must step out while the other three hold. On the dump: nearest D retrieves, everyone else is already facing north — the retreat becomes the breakout.
