Sagging Zone Coverage

D-ZoneAdvanced5v5Backcheck/D-ZoneTeam Systems
Objective: Strong-side pressure, weak-side collapse: attack the puck with two while the back side sinks into the slot and erases the cross-ice play. Setup: Puck on the strong-side wall. D1 pressures with C in support; the weak-side winger sags off his point into the slot; D2 owns the net-front. Execution: Strong side plays 2-on-the-puck: D1 takes the body, C takes the next touch — the wall is a trap, not a threat. Weak-side winger sinks to the top of the crease line, splitting the difference between his point man and the backdoor — he takes away the royal-road pass with his stick. Trigger: puck moves high or crosses the ice = everyone recovers OUT to their zone posture; the sag only exists while the puck is below the dots. Coaching points: Use it when: opponents score off cross-slot and backdoor plays — the sag concedes the weak point shot and kills the seam. What beats it: a quick point shot through traffic from the ignored weak point — the sagging winger must still explode out on the release. The whole system is the weak-side stick: in the passing lane, blade flat, every second the puck is low.
