Breakout Reads: Wheel vs Rim
D-ZoneHalf IceIntermediate1v1Breakout
Objective: Teach the retrieval read: pressure decides wheel or rim — not habit. Setup: D retrieving dumped pucks behind the net, one live forechecker, winger on the wall. Execution: Coach dumps; D retrieves with a shoulder check on the way back. Forechecker attacks on a random path: hard = RIM to the wall winger; soft/contained = WHEEL and skate it out. Winger supports low on rims and stretches on wheels. Coaching points: The shoulder check IS the read — take the picture early. Wheel = net protects you; use it. Rims are firm and flat, catchable at the hash marks.
