Controlled 5-Back Breakout

D-ZoneIntermediate5v5BreakoutTeam Systems
Objective: The set breakout against a waiting trap: park it behind the net, bring all five back, and leave the zone together with speed. Setup: D1 sets the puck behind the net; D2 posts wall-side; all three forwards swing back below the tops of the circles in their lanes. Execution: D1 holds behind the net and lets the picture develop — no forechecker can touch him there, so time is free. All three forwards swing DEEP and turn north together: wide lanes stay wide, C swings under the puck for the first option. Trigger: the forwards hit full stride = D1 steps out and hits the C (or strong wing) moving — five players cross the blue line within a second of each other. Coaching points: Use it when: facing a 1-2-2 or 1-3-1 that feasts on rushed breakouts — control beats the trap; panic feeds it. What beats it: a team that forechecks the set itself — if F1 attacks D1 behind the net, the wall winger is open by definition; take it immediately. Timing is the system: forwards arriving flat-footed or early makes it a standstill breakout, which is no breakout at all.
