King (Queen) of the Ring is a possession-based Small Area Game (SAG). Players battle and work to maintain puck control from each other while staying inside their circle. On the whistle, whichever player has possession gets to skate to the opposite net to score. The player without possession must gap up and defend the oncoming attack.
Step by step
Step 1 — Phase 1: 1v1 Player Battle
- On the Whistle, one player from each line enters the "Ring"
- They race and battle to gain possession and keep possession.
- If the puck exits the circle, the coach sends in a new puck
- No shooting during this phase.
Step 2 — Phase 2: 1v1 Transition
- On the Whistle, whichever player has possession gets to drive the puck a cross-ice to try and score
- The player without possession has to quickly gap up and defend the oncoming player from the other circle.
