Standard Wing-Wall Breakout
D-ZoneIntermediate5v5BreakoutTeam Systems
Objective: The default breakout every team needs: D retrieves, wings post on the walls at the hashes, center swings puck-side, weak wing stretches. Setup: D1 with the puck low, D2 supporting net-front, both wingers ON the wall at the hash marks, C timing his swing. Execution: D1's first look is UP: the strong-side winger on the wall, tape-to-tape at the hashes. C swings puck-side and slightly below the winger — he's the second option and the immediate support on the wall touch. Weak-side winger stretches through the middle third the moment the first pass is made — he's the home-run and the entry speed. Coaching points: Reads, in order: up to the wing, over to D2, wheel behind the net, rim — pressure decides, never habit. What beats it: a pinching D on the wall winger — the answer is the chip behind the pinch to the stretching C (call it 'wall out'). Wingers face UP ICE on the catch with feet already moving — a wall catch standing still is a turnover with extra steps.
